  • More details: We all know that every few years, you may be getting your car inspected and it fails because the tire tread has worn down. But did you ever wonder what happens to the rubber that wears off. Some of it ends up in our streams. Austin Gray, an assistant professor in our Biological Sciences Department has been taking his classes to Stroubles Creek, the little stream that runs through campus, and they’ve found ample evidence of this and other tire-tread contamination. Along with his students, Gray is researching the effects of these microplastics on our waterways. Gray now plans to expand his micro- and nano-plastic particle collection out to Christiansburg and into the Roanoke Valley.
