Public stock transfer instructions

I. Stock Held in Brokerage Account

The Virginia Tech Foundation partners with BNY Mellon Capital Markets, LLC, a subsidiary of the Bank of New York Mellon Corporation, to process non-trust related stock gifts. Donors wishing to contribute stock should inform the Office of Treasury Services about their intention by using the stock gift processing form. This form enables your broker to transfer stocks in 'street name' directly to the Virginia Tech Foundation. Brokers will require the Foundation’s DTC number, found on page two of the form, to complete the transfer. Additionally, the gift details section of the form must be completed by either the donor or the broker and can be sent to the Foundation’s Office of Treasury Services either by email at stockgifts@vtf.org or by fax at 540-231-7751. If you have any questions or need assistance, Treasury Services can be reached at 540-231-7094.

II. Actual Stock Certificates Held by Donor

Three items need to be included as part of your gift package; the stock certificate(s), a letter of authorization, and a signed stock power. Please do not fill out the assignment section or the signature block on the stock certificate. Instead, the assignment and signature should be completed as outlined below.

A. Assignment

On the back of the stock certificate (near the top) there is a place to assign the stock over to another party. Do not fill out this section.

Instead, prepare a letter of authorization stating your intent to donate the stock to the Virginia Tech Foundation and how the gift should be applied. The signature(s) on the letter of authorization must match the name(s) on the front of the stock certificate(s). Also, a separate letter of authorization is needed for each certificate having a different CUSIP number.

B. Signature

Please do not sign the bottom of the stock certificate. Instead sign a separate stock power. Please do not fill out the top or middle section of the stock power. The signature section and social security number are the only sections that need to be completed on the stock power, and the signatures must match the name(s) on the front of the stock certificate(s). Also, a separate stock power is needed for each certificate having a different CUSIP number.

Signature(s) must be stamped with a Medallion Signature Guarantee by a qualified financial institution (such as a commercial bank, savings bank, savings and loan, U.S. stockbroker and security dealer, or credit union) that is participating in an approved Medallion Signature Guarantee Program. A NOTARY SEAL IS NOT ACCEPTABLE.

Send the stock certificate(s) and letter of authorization in one envelope using certified mail, and mail the stock power separately (regular mail is fine). The two envelopes should be sent to:
